Even in this modern era, outbreaks are nearly constant, though not every outbreak reaches pandemic level as COVID-19 has.<\/p><p>Today\u2019s visualization outlines some of history\u2019s most deadly pandemics, from the Antonine Plague to the current COVID-19 event.<\/p><h2>A Timeline of Historical Pandemics<\/h2><p>Disease and illnesses have plagued humanity since the earliest days, our mortal flaw. However, it was not until the marked shift to agrarian communities that the scale and spread of these diseases increased dramatically.<\/p><p>Widespread trade created new opportunities for human and animal interactions that sped up such epidemics. Some, such as the <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/51\/25546\"><i>Plague of Justinian<\/i><\/a><i> and <\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosmedicine\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pmed.1001558\"><i>Swine Flu<\/i><\/a><i>, are subject to debate based on new evidence.<\/i><\/p><p>Despite the persistence of disease and pandemics throughout history, there\u2019s one consistent trend over time \u2013 a gradual reduction in the death rate. Healthcare improvements and understanding the factors that incubate pandemics have been powerful tools in mitigating their impact.<\/p><h2>Pandemic Vaccines of the Past<\/h2><p>Although the assumption can be made that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visualcapitalist.com\/every-vaccine-treatment-covid-19-so-far\/\">developing a vaccine<\/a> for infectious diseases has become more efficient since the 1900s, that statement is not entirely correct.<\/p><p>It took approximately 25 years to develop a vaccine for the Spanish Flu which killed between 40-50 million people. Similarly, it was only last year that the FDA approved the first Ebola vaccine\u2014an effort that took 43 years since the discovery of the virus.<\/p><p>But while scientists and medical experts have made headway in stopping major pandemics in their tracks, some of the worst outbreaks in history have yet to be cured.\u00a0<\/p><p>Here is a closer look at the timeframes for vaccine development for
